The rings of Uranus are much darker than those of Saturn. The latter are thought to be comprised of particles of water ice. But those of Uranus, seen here, are probably coated in a dark, sooty substance. The ring fragments are believed to be on the order of a metre or so across, each tumbling around the giant planet like a tiny independent satellite. See also Uranus.
